Deep fried delicacies, carnival rides, live music, competitions and more await you at this year’s state fair! Be sure to get your tickets ahead of time online or at Walgreens; prices go up on opening day – Friday 9/29!
Who doesn’t love the atmosphere of a live music performance? The Main Stage will offer music all ten days of the fair featuring Virginia based bands playing a wide variety of genres including country hits, solid gold oldies, smooth jazz, classic rock and of course, some good ol’ down home bluegrass. Bring your dancing shoes, it’s sure to be a blast!
I don’t know about you but I go to the fair for one reason and one reason only – the food. The Virginia State Fair is the only place where it’s acceptable to eat as much weird, deep fried, food as you want. Oreos, pickles, cookie dough, tomatoes – you fry it, I’ll try it. For those of you who are less inclined to eat things soaked in grease (your loss) the countless food vendors are guaranteed to have something everyone can enjoy. Even your teenage daughter who “isn’t doing meat, dairy, or sugar” this week! You can find me at the tent serving cheeseburgers with donuts for buns.
With tons of rides, competitions, and demonstrations, there’s enough to keep the whole family entertained! Try your hand at milking a cow, watch a working sheep dog demonstration, or my personal favorite, Mutton Bustin. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a competition where little kids try to ride sheep rodeo style and hang on for as long as they can, it’s truly hilarious!
If animals aren’t up your alley, the acrobats, magic shows, and circus performances should keep you entertained! And don’t forget to get your ride tickets! A ride costs anywhere from 3-6 tickets to ride and each ticket costs $1. However you can purchase ticket sheets for a discounted price or unlimited ride wristbands for the daredevils in the family!
